World's top 5 Technology Brands in 2009

In the latest report of annual Brandz top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands list, as many as five technology companies enters in the top 10 position. Their brand image is discussed here.

In recent times, the global economic crisis has eroded the IT companies marketcap, but due to their efforts in various fields, their brand image remains intact. In the hard times, the finance and auto industry are the two severely affected industry verticals, while technology companies continue to hold the control in the world's biggest brands.

In the recent annual Brandz top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands list, as many as five technology companies enters in the top 10 position. According to the report, in this year the brand value of the top 100 grew by 2% to $1.95 trillion.

Google Inc.
Google Inc, the number one search engine tops the list and become the world's first brand to cross the $100 billion mark beating other household names like Microsoft and Coca Cola. The company values at $101.4 billion which is 25 percent more than Microsoft.

It is a California based company earning revenue from advertising related to its Internet search, e-mail, online mapping, office productivity, social networking, and video sharing services as well as selling advertising-free versions of the same technologies. As of March 31, 2009, the company has 20,164 full-time employees. According to the report, the rising popularity of online search advertising, which is cheaper than display, is benefitting Google which owns 73 per cent marketshare in this area.

Microsoft Corp.
At number two on the list is Redmond, Washington based company Microsoft. The company's brand value touched $76,249 million in 2008-09, up 8 per cent up from last year.
Microsoft Corporation is a multinational computer technology corporation that develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports a wide range of software products for computing devices. Its most profitable products are the Microsoft Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office suite of productivity software.

Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates in 1975, and it has operations in more than hundred countries and employs nearly 80,000 people.

International Business Machines Corp.
IBM aka Big Blue is at number four on the overall list with its brand value stands at $66,622 million. The company witnessed a healthy rise of over 20 per cent over the last year's value.
It is Armonk, New York based company manufactures and sells computer hardware and software, and offers infrastructure services, hosting services, and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology. It is more than 100-years old, with over 4 lakh employees worldwide.

Apple Inc.
With a brand value of $63,113 million, Apple Inc is at the 6th spot on the list. The brand value is up 14 per cent from the last year.

Apple designs and manufactures consumer electronics and software products, which include Macintosh computers, the iPod and the iPhone. Apple software includes the Mac OS X operating system, the iTunes media browser, the iLife suite of multimedia and creativity software, the iWork suite of productivity software, and Final Cut Studio, a suite of professional audio and film-industry software products. Apple also operates more than 250 retail stores in nine countries and an online store where hardware and software products are sold.

China Mobile Communications Corporation
The largest mobile phone operator of China, China Mobile is at the 7st spot on the list, with a brand value of $61,283 million, up 7 per cent from the last year. It is the world's largest mobile phone operator ranked by number of subscribers, with 415 million customers (as of June 30, 2008).

According to the report, because of opportunities in rural areas without landlines where cellular operators provide the first extensive telephone service accounted for half of the China Mobile’s growth. The company provides various other value-added services such as data, IP telephone and multimedia and also operates Internet services and different stratified services like GoTone, M-Zone and Easyown.
