Working Principle of Digital Printing

Digital printing is capable of creating very sharp, clear images and text which is essential for the production of professional quality documents and sales promotion materials like brochures, flyers, direct mailers etc.

Digital Printing may be defined as the art of reproducing digital images on printing paper, photographic paper, and many other printable surfaces. Digital printing systems dispense with the use of films, plates and ink that are essential for offset printing. Digital printing is done through an electro-photographic process.

The working principle of digital printing is not difficult to comprehend. Digital printing only goes through a brief and brisk process. For instance, let us assume you want some pictures printed. Once the pictures are available, all you have to do is transfer your pictures to the computer that is attached to a digital printer. While the picture is on the computer, you would be able to make all the necessary adjustments that you would desire for your final output. When an image is created on a computer, it is saved into a digital file which converts the piece of work into a digital format. When this file is forwarded to the printer for reproduction, the digitization process ensures that the printed edges of an image are clear and sharp.

These images are captured from a matrix of dots, generally called pixels. The digitized image is then used to digitally controlled deposition of ink, toner or exposure to electromagnetic energy, such as light, to reproduce images. Please remember digital printers are highly capable of coming up with print jobs that could easily match the quality that your conventional printers come up with.

Digital printing technologies give the designer wider options of substrates. This prevents distortion of images that occurs in analog process, like screen printing. It also requires less harsh methods of holding the substrate in the press, thereby giving more options of substrates. This means that substrates such as fabrics, very thin paper, and even ceramics can be safely printed on offering the customer more choices in designing.

One of the ways the clarity of reproduction is achieved in the digital printing process is through the four color process. This methodology is where four color separations (magenta, cyan, black and yellow more familiarly known as the CMYK process) are used to develop a crisp, multi-colored reproduction. These colors are printed onto the paper as a series of tiny dots which make up the 'blocks' of tint.
These color combinations digitally processed and printed have the potential to produce literally millions of color shades and tones, enabling the digital printing process to capture the true picture. Printers used for the digital imaging process with the CMYK capabilities are critical to replicate the color intensity needed.

When digital printing technology first surfaced, there were many criticisms regarding comparisons the quality of print output. But digital printing quality has come a long way and is now comparable to other, more traditional methods. In fact, digital printing in many cases seems to even exceed the quality and versatility of conventional techniques. Digital printing is able to construct complex images with the use of photographs.

In fact, using equipment such as a digital camera, a basic scanner and an image manipulation package, digital printing enables the user to create bespoke and high quality reproductions.

Printers used for digital printing can either be an inkjet printer or a LaserJet variety. These different types of printers, each with its distinctive features, are essential to digital printing and should be chosen carefully.

Laserjet printers generally print much quicker than their inkjet counterparts but longer-term, inkjet printers are often cheaper to run than laserjets. Laserjet digital printers use small 'jets' of ink, which are bonded to statically charged paper with heat, whilst inkjet printers utilize sprays of ink on the micrometer scale onto the paper or other surfaces.
