Working with a graphic designer can be a difficult chore for many companies for a variety of reasons. Partly it has to do with the fact that graphic designers are often hired from outside the company, and work for themselves rather than just the company. |

The first thing to consider is the communication that you keep up. It is a lot easier to fall behind on communicating with an outside graphic designer than it will be with one closer to your company, and this lack of communication can lead to all sorts of problems if you aren’t being careful.
From the very beginning you’ll want tob make sure everyone is on the same page. Be sure your designers know what type of communication you want and that they don’t start to get upset when you keep regular tabs on what they’re up to. This way you won’t have negative surprises down the line, and some bad blood between the two of you if you weren’t sure how to keep the lines of communication open.
Next, be sure that both sides are perfectly aware right from the beginning what needs to be done. If the purpose of the graphic designer is to design for business card printing be sure that they know what needs to go into the process and what you want from the card. It can be very easy to assume the other person knows what you want even if they have a completely different idea. Often you won’t find out until they hand you the business card and it isn’t anything like you were expecting. This can be avoided if both sides sit down from the beginning and map out what each one wants.
I’m sure you’re probably noticing a trend already, and that deals with what you set up from your first communications with each other.
I would say that the number one rule for working with an outside designer is to be certain that when you first hire out their services you make sure to take the time to find out what they want and what you want. Be positive that both sides know exactly where the other side stands, and that no surprise are in store for anyone. If you can do that than everything else will run a lot smoother.
This applies to not only the communication and design process, but also the pay and time it will take to get everything done. Map out everything you can think of, or at least know some rough estimates. Plus, if you keep communications strong, than if any changes do come up you can quickly find out about them and avoid any problems.
