Printing is a growing industry today. As the printing needs of people, companies, and businesses continue to rise, the more commercial printing becomes a popular option.

For all your printing needs such as calendars, postcards, business cards, brochures, flyers, and the likes, printing companies are more than willing to take care of your concerns Large scale projects, most especially, need to have the accuracy and expertise of printers.

Well, you can probably produce these prints yourself, but rest assured that the quality of your prints would be best done with printing companies that offer their services. With a printing company in charge of your work, all you need to do is instruct them on what to do and they’ll gladly print it for you.

This is a very comfortable option for all businesses since it lessens the burden with regards to printing needs, and yet, it offers the best deals that you can find, mainly due to the competitive market.

But if you choose commercial printing for your printing needs, you inevitably have to be familiar with some important terms that would allow you to understand your prints better. Each industry has its own language. You would not want wrong prints just because you do not understand basic terms that are relevant to the industry.

Here are some of the most important terms that you need to know:

1. Bleed. This is the extra space that your product layout needs in order to be printed in the best manner possible. It is often set at .125 of an inch, and is used as an allowance for cutting your print to size.

So when your printing company says that you need to send your layouts with bleeds for them to be printed, then you know that this is the extra space you need to extend your artwork to. This way the colors run right up to the edges and no white spaces would fill the gap any gap, if any.

2. Pantone / Spot Colors. These are the extra ink that your printer needs to buy in order to provide for the colors of your prints that cannot be produced in the CMYK color gamut. These are specialized colors whose cost will be added to the overall amount of your prints. If you choose Pantone colors, you must be aware that your prints might come out more expensive.

3. Proofing. This gives you a print-ready file of the image you sent to your printers. The file may either be electronic or a hard copy one. The latter means that it is printed out for you to see your print in real time and in real colors before it is run for production.

Studying the proof is vital so that no errors and problems may incur during production and on the print output itself. So it is wise to avail a proof and study your files before proceeding any further.

4. Gang Run. This maximizes the print and minimizes the cost by allowing different print jobs to be included in a single sheet of paper. This method is often used by offset printers in order to even out or lessen the cost of the print jobs.

Some printers may ask you to utilize the whole gang run. This would be a good option for you to print your other needs as long as it can still fit in the paper. Add door hangers, catalogs, or anything in order for you to utilize the gang run.

Mostly used in offset printing by commercial printing companies, you can be assured of high volume prints with consistency in this process.
