It all comes down to balancing career against the biological urge to have children (at some point) and the historical role of carers to aging parents. Nothing to it, really. Except, if women are going to make the independence real, they have to make formal decisions. This is not something that can stay on a wing-and-a-prayer basis. Goals should be written down and strategies devised for achieving them. Anything less than this leaves women unprepared for the new realities.
Insurance is a key part of the mixture. Except, as the recession bites into family budgets, an increasing proportion of homes around the US no longer carry any insurance. Is this a problem? Well, ask yourself how much debt you have right now. Assuming you have kept the home despite the mortgage being underwater, and you have been paying down the credit card and other debts, what would happen if you died young? At present, your pay is making it possible to keep going. Without that pay, the home may have to be sold at a loss. Credit scores will fall through the floor. There will be disruption to the lives of any children and a loss of peace of mind by your parents.
Let's suppose you are a single mom. Your's is the only income. Without insurance, will there even be enough to cover the cost of the funeral before all the credit cards shut down? Keeping this real, no policy can replace you as a person, but it can leave enough money behind to pay off all the debts and leave some over for getting life back on track. It is exactly the same if you have a partner and you both earn. At present, you spend your joint earnings. If your income disappears, what will happen to your current obligations? Worse, how will your partner cope without you there to look after the children and run the home? When you are older, having a cash value in the policy gives you security.
If there is an emergency, you can borrow some of that money to tide yourself over. Should the emergency become a crisis, you can surrender or sell the policy. Life insurance is peace of mind at every point during your life. It's saving for both your future and the future of your family. So take advice and get as many life insurance quotes to ensure you get the best value for money given your long-term needs. Taking the time to plan now gives you the best chance of success.
