You should be starting a business this year. Really, you should. I can’t think of any better time than the present to get focused on business ownership. After all, is there ever a bad time for a raise and a little more power?

Of course, you may think business ownership is only a dream. You look at potential problems securing funding, paying for materials and all the other barriers to entry your mind can conjure up. After all, you’re no entrepreneur, right? Before you know it, the idea you were so excited about only a few short weeks ago has turned into a big ball of self-defeat. So much for that big pay raise.

Well, guess what? You’re focused on all the wrong things. The truth is that there are few things as satisfying as being the owner of your own successful business. In case you needed a reminder, here are a few reasons why. And remember, when you venture out on your own as an entrepreneur, a positive attitude is key to your success — that means you need to focus on the right things. Doing so can turn you into a successful entrepreneur.

For starters, as a business owner, you can bank on the fact that you’ll never be fired or laid off again. At the same time, you’ll be making a long-term investment in your career on your own terms; you have the power. Working for someone else isn’t as secure as it’s cracked up to be. The average employee is usually only with a company for about four years before they are shown the door or choose to leave. It’s not like it used to be.

Furthermore, most businesses don’t treat employees particularly well. Employees have become more of an expense and a nuisance, or so it would seem. Once you have your own business, you’ll feel productive and get to directly experience the fruits of your labor. It’s rewarding and offers all kinds of motivation. If you want a raise, give yourself one. No more asking your boss for a fair portion of your contributions.

It’s true that your personal success has often been overlooked and undervalued by your previous employers; it doesn’t just feel that way.
