|
Having been a registered nurse for over 14 years, and the last 4 years in aesthetic medicine, Abby Borbon-Roaquin is now a manager and clinician at Ulan Medical Spa in San Diego, California. Here, she explains the process of exfoliation and how it is done both in medical spas and at home. |

Exfoliation Treatment includes two kinds of methods, in mechanical way and in chemical way, respectively.
Microdermabrasion is an example of mechanical exfoliation. It uses either fine aluminum oxide crystals or a diamond-tipped head to abrade the skin gently as the tip planes across with a slight vacuuming action. It is a quick procedure designed to remove dead skin cells.
Chemical peel is an example of chemical exfoliation. It is a procedure that uses a chemical solution causing the outer layers of damaged skin to peel off. By selecting the type of acid, the amount of time your skin is exposed, and the number of layers applied, the treatment can be customized according to your goals and needs. Usually, glycolic acids and trichloroacetic acids are used for anti-aging and pigment problems, and salicylic acids are for acne-prone skin.
At-Home Exfoliation Treatments are used to maintain and enhance the results achieved through in-office treatments. Face washes, gels, and lotions are designed for daily use, and they can be used at home.
At Ulan Medical Spa, we recommend two physician-grade skincare lines, one is a face wash containing 7% glycolic acid by Prescribed Solutions, and the other is a mini-peel gel containing 10.8% glycolic acid by Glytone. You can give your skin a boost at home, by leaving the gel on your face for about 10 minutes, 2 to 3 times a week. You may have to ease into these regimens. For example, if you have sensitive or dry skin, you could start twice a week with the face wash, and then increasingly, you are able to do it daily.
