Why Do I Need a Lawyer After an Auto Accident?

If you have been in an auto accident, you may be wondering if you should contact a lawyer. Whether you need a lawyer depends largely on the circumstances of the specific accident.

Many simple “fender benders” do not require a lawyer, and you can usually resolve the matter through your insurer; however, if anyone has been hurt in the accident, you should contact a lawyer.
When You Need a Lawyer

You should contact an attorney if:
• Anyone has been injured as a result of the accident.

• An injury caused by the accident has resulted in an inability to fulfill your work hours.

• Someone has been killed because of the accident.

• You believe that some of the details of the police report are inaccurate, and the report faults you for the accident.

• You insurer is acting in bad faith.

• You need assistance with paperwork or forms that you are required to complete after the accident.

• You are unsure of your rights.

If any of the above circumstances apply to your auto accident, then you will need the services of a car accident lawyer.
What to do After a Car Accident
Once you have been in a car accident, you may be disoriented. If you feel capable and you are not seriously injured, the following is a general guideline for what you should do after the accident:

• Get the contact information of the other driver and any witnesses. You should get the other driver’s phone number, address, license plate number and insurance information.

• Seek medical attention. Although you may feel unharmed, it is best to have a medical examination to detect any injuries. You may need compensation at a later date for treating these injuries, and it is best to have a medical record.

• Keep your communication with the other driver to a minimum. In the confusion of the moment, you do not want to risk saying that the accident was your fault. Be sure to provide detailed information to the police.

• If you have the ability, take photos of the accident. Use your cell phone if it has a camera, or remember to keep a disposable camera in your car in case you are involved in a car accident.
Serious injuries caused by an accident are not the only reason to contact a lawyer. If you have any questions about your liability or any reason to think that the other driver may blame you, then you should consider contacting a lawyer.
