Cotton is simple to grow and produce, so long as the weather is warm and the rainfall is moderate. Heavy soil is best, but it does not need to be especially nutrient rich. Cotton is resistant to drought and simple to plant. The ease of raising cotton has brought about cultivation in the southern United States (The South Plains), China, the Soviet Union, India, Pakistan, Turkey, and Brazil.
Although pests have (and continue) to attack cotton crops, new methods of genetic modification have caused cotton plants to become resistant to various bugs (such as the pink bollworm and the cotton bollworm). Pesticides are still a staple of the cotton industry, but some farmers are beginning to grow organic cotton crops (without the use of any insecticides or genetic engineering). These cotton crops are used largely for baby clothing and organic diapers.
Regardless of how it was cultivated, cotton has proved to be one of the most favored choices when it comes to every day fabric use. Many consumers choose cotton textiles for bedding, bath towels, cleaning rags, coffee filters, tents, fishnets, and of course garment production. Cotton fabric is naturally lightweight, breathable, and extremely durable. As a result it is all but taken over modern households and contemporary apparel.
Because of its extreme durability and breathable nature cotton fabric has become essential for the working individual. Synthetic and wool fabrics are not as breathable as cotton, nor are they as lightweight. Silk fabric is luxurious and comfortable, but hardly fit for holding up to the demands of every day life. Thus, cotton easily trumps all other fabrics when it comes to on-the-job fabric. Garment producers regularly produce 100% cotton work wear (whether it’s a business suit, mechanics jumpsuit, or scrubs).
The professional medical industry in particular has embraced the use of cotton and cotton blends by utilizing the fabrics in their scrubs. Though scrubs come in a vast array of colors, cuts, and shapes, nearly all scrubs, lab coats, and medical uniforms rely on cotton for its durability and lightweight, breathable comfort.
So whether it’s a bath towel, coffee filter, or medical scrubs, cotton’s efficiency within the fabric industry is undeniable. Plus, its ease of cultivation makes it a top choice for farmers. Cotton is king and well deserves its throne.
