Few people will ever experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI) to themselves or their loved ones, but every day people put themselves at risk of this serious personal injury.

Daily Activity TBI Risks

Daily activities that pose risk of TBI include the obvious, such as driving, construction work, and sports. Motor vehicle accidents account for nearly 20% of all TBIs. However, slip and fall accidents account for almost 30% of all TBIs making simple activities around the house or running errands more dangerous than traveling. Falling over uneven concrete, yard equipment or children’s toys, and slipping on wet floors are all possibilities.

Children seem to always be falling off of bikes or getting hurt while playing. If your child does not wear a helmet while riding their bike, you may want to consider this safety measure. Auto accidents and shaken baby syndrome are also leading contenders for causing TBI in children.

One of the many sad statistics of TBI in the U.S. is that over 10% of them are caused by domestic violence and assault. Firearms and blunt force trauma seriously injure people from all walks of life.

Employment TBI Risks

Fire fighting, construction sites, and mining may present more risk for TBI than other jobs, but any job has some risk. It is the responsibility of employers to keep equipment and the work site safe for their employees. Workplace safety should be communicated through written and verbal notice, and enforced. Every year employees suffer TBI because of employer negligence. In cases like this, the employee may be entitled to Workers’ compensation.

Sport TBI Risks

Organized sports like football and soccer can cause TBI, but so can water sports like water skiing, surfing, and even fishing. Negligence of other parties, malfunctioning equipment and more can cause accidents that will take a lifetime to recover from.
