Who is a Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?

Current technology makes improving your appearance easier than you may think. Porcelain veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures in the United States, and for good reason. Veneers make it relatively simple, and painless, to completely transform a person's smile.

Porcelain veneers are thin shells made of porcelain that are bonded to tooth enamel. Because veneers are molded to each individual mouth, they do a remarkably good job correcting gapping, discoloration, and mildly crooked teeth. Veneers can be tinted to seamlessly match the look and texture of each patient's teeth. Many patients find that porcelain veneers have very few drawbacks, chiefly the slight possibility that veneers may crack under extreme pressure.

Not everyone is a candidate for porcelain veneers. Patients with significant tooth enamel decay are usually not good candidates for porcelain veneers. The veneers must adhere to tooth enamel, and so all porcelain veneer patients must have adequate enamel on the surface of their teeth. Broken teeth can sometimes also cause a problem for patients interested in a porcelain veneer procedure. Teeth may need to be restored before the dentist can apply veneers.

Diseased teeth also pose a special problem for porcelain veneers candidates. Patients who grind their teeth may also make poor candidates for porcelain veneers. Patients who grind their teeth in their sleep must agree to use a teeth guard at night to avoid wear and tear on the veneers.
Good candidates for porcelain veneers have some combination of several important characteristics:

• Wants a quicker result than teeth straightening (braces) or whitening treatments can accomplish.
• Has gaps between teeth
• Has mildly crooked teeth
• Has discolored teeth that doesn't respond to whitening procedures
• Has a healthy mouth, including a lack of gum disease or other oral problems
• Has a "gummy" or gum-dominated smile
• Understands the benefits and limitations of porcelain veneers

The best way to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers is to visit a qualified cosmetic dentist. Make sure your dentist is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, because that ensures your doctor is up to date on best practices and new procedures. A good cosmetic dentist will offer you a consultation to discuss all your options for porcelain veneers, examine your teeth, and recommend a specific course of action. Make sure to look for a porcelain veneers dentist that is willing to take the time to answer all of your questions, including questions about cost.
