After identifying what information you would want to put in your business card, it’s now time for you to choose your design and the material you want to make it more unique and distinct.

The market is full of choices when it comes to the materials you would need for your custom business cards. Technology made sure of that. From metal to magnetic sheeting, to wood and plastic, the selection is so vast that you might actually have a hard time choosing from the lot. And let’s not even mention that there is still a variety of folding and finishing for you to use.

It’s not anymore surprising to see unconventional custom business cards scattered around. From the traditional 2 x 3.5 inch paper to the embossing and foil stamping that is made available, you can add a touch of glamour and pizzazz to your simple business cards for you to attract more attention.

Hang on. Before you try all those new stuff for your print cards, why don’t you consider first if you really need an unconventional material for your business. It might be that the traditional would work even better for you instead of the unusual.

When deciding what material to use for your business card printing, consider these factors:

1 – Identify your brand and image.

It’s not enough that you choose the materials you want without looking at your kind of brand. If you are the traditional and conventional type of business, you’re probably better off with paper stock. Don’t go to metals, plastic or even magnetic sheeting for your business cards as they may not be appreciated by your clients. In addition, unconventional business cards may not be able to reflect the values and image that you would want to have for your target clients.

The key is to emphasize your design by choosing the most appropriate material for it. These two elements should always go hand in hand to produce the most effective tool for your business.

2 – Consider your limitations.

Believe it or not, your business cards have limitations that you have to consider when deciding on conventional or unusual materials. It may be that the ink does not seep in as you’ve expected, or that the material is too thick to carry around. Add to that that you’re having problems with resolution and saturation. When this happens, you just have to rely on your design to get you through. Or else, change your design to suit the materials you insist on using.

3 – Breaking a cardinal rule should be justified.

Your basic information should always be up front. There’s no breaking this rule actually. Very rarely that there is a justification for breaking such rule. If (and that’s a big if, mind you) you do have a justified reason to do so, just be sure that you still make it easy and simple for your target clients to get in touch with you. Your design will just be a waste of your time and your client’s as well if you make it an effort for him or her to find your contact information.

Using unconventional materials go a long way in getting you that distinct image that can provide an impact to your clients and prospects. But before you decide to use it, be sure that you understand your brand and how your material can help in successfully promoting it.
