As an practical example of this problem, you may come across the below error message while installing Microsoft Windows 7 on your iMac using Boot Camp utility:
“Create a Partition for Windows
Each operating system requires its own partition on the disk.
Drag the divider to set the size of the partitions, or click one of the buttons.”
The above error occurs even if you have plenty of free disk space on Windows partition. You see two buttons on the error message dialog box, namely- Divide Equally or Use 32 GB. You can select any one among them to create partition.
When you click the Partition button after selecting appropriate partitioning option, you get further error message stating:
“The disk cannot be partition because some files cannot be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.”
Cause
1) You may face this behavior due to either of the below reasons:
2) Heavy file fragmentation on the hard drive and Boot Camp is not getting contiguous free space to create partition.
