Cosmetic products have been in use since prehistoric days. A variety of such products are today used by almost everybody. However, its use is harmful because of the presence of dangerous chemicals in its composition.

The word cosmetics are derived from the Greek word kosmetike tekhne, meaning "art of dress and ornament". This implies that articles which help in enhancing one’s appearance can be termed as Cosmetic Products.

Archaeological evidence shows that toiletry was used as early as 3500 BC in Egypt. Famous personalities like Nefertiti as well as the mask of Tutankhamen all have indication of such usage by the ancient rulers. Not only in Egypt, the Greeks and the Romans of ancient times also used these products. Use of cosmetic products has also been found in the ancient kingdom of Israel as well. The Old Testament of approximately 840 BC speaks about Jezebel who had painted her eyelids. The Biblical book of Esther also contains description of various beauty treatments.

In the Middle Ages, although its use was a taboo and strictly forbidden by the Church, many women still made use of these. Women would also put white lead pigment that was known as "ceruse" on their faces to appear to have pale skin.

With the advent of the 20th century, the popularity of using additional products to beautify oneself has increased manifold. Young girls get fascinated and attracted by these products. Markets have been able to entice the new generation by introducing flavored lipsticks and glosses and also by improving the packaging of such products. In fact, in the present age, Cosmetic Products are used by both men and women. Skin-care creams and lotions are used on a daily basis by most.

Perfumes and deodorants are used to control body odour owing to perspiration in summer months and also to ensure that fresh fragrance emanate from the body. Lipsticks, Nail polish, eye and facial makeup are used to enhance different features of the face and body. Colors are used in the form of contact lens and hair color to bring variety to hair and eyes. In fact, "make-up," which can be taken to be a part of cosmetic products refers primarily to colored products intended to alter the user’s appearance.

Cosmetics have been in use for thousands of years. However, the use of these products involves a lot of risk because of the presence of harmful chemicals within these products. Apart from color additives, cosmetic products and their ingredients are not subject to FDA regulation prior to their release into the market.

It is only when a product is found to violate Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) and Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA) after its release that the FDA may start taking action against this violation. With many new products released into the market every season, it is hard to keep track of the safety of every product. The absence of regulation of the manufacture and use of cosmetics has led to a lot of negative side effects, deformities, blindness, and even death through the ages.
