That wonderful electric garage door opener surely doesn't seem so wonderful, all of a sudden. You're stuck and cannot access either your home or your vehicle. It's an extreme inconvenience to be unable to use your car.
Perhaps your child is waiting at a soccer game to be picked up. Or maybe you're going to be late for work, again! Or maybe you've just driven inside, the door closed, and then BOOM, a nearby lightening strike or overloaded power box has cut off your electrical supply. You may feel slightly claustrophobic or have a trunk full of groceries that you've just brought home from the grocery store. But relax! You can take care of this little calamity pretty quickly.
First of all, don't panic. Designers have thought of this possibility, as well. Inside every garage with an electric opener, there is a manual release cable. Look above your head and you will see it attached to an area near your ceiling. Reach up for its handle and pull with a sharp motion. Instantly it will switch to manual release and you will be able to open it with your own strength.
For times when you are locked outside of your garage, there is actually a device on the market called an emergency release kit. This is a good thing to have BEFORE the unfortunate lock out. It's fairly easy to put one in with a minimum of handyman skills and tools.
The device can be installed on your garage door. The homeowner just needs to drill a hole in their garage door and install the device. What is it exactly? The emergency release kit is a locking and unlocking mechanism inside a box that is attached to the cables. In case of a power outage emergency, the lockbox is opened with the key, which in turn brings the cable with it. By sharply pulling on the cable, the trolley mechanism is released and you are able to manually open the door.
So don't worry, increase your awareness of where the release cables are located and install the emergency release system, as well, before the power is out, and you will be able to rest assured that you won't be locked in or out again.
