What is Telangiectasia? |
||||
|
Telangiectasia is the medical name for spider veins—small, bluish, dilated blood vessels that somewhat resemble a spider web on the surface of the skin. Spider veins can appear anywhere on the body but are most common on the upper thighs, below the knees and around the face. |

There can be several causes of spider veins including:
• Genetics
• Age
• Gender; spider veins are more common in women
• Pregnancy
• Prolonged sitting or standing in one place and general inactivity
• Environmental damage
• Trauma
When to see a Doctor
Spider veins are generally considered harmless, but they may cause some physical discomfort along with emotional distress resulting from their appearance. However, like varicose veins, spider veins may be an indication of a larger problem and should be inspected by an endovascular doctor if you encounter problems including:
• Swelling around the vein
• Rashes in the area near the vein
• Easy bleeding or bruising around the vein
• Sores or skin ulcers
These may be an indication of a larger problem and should be inspected by a qualified doctor as soon as possible.
Treating Spider Veins
Spider veins are treated with sclerotherapy. This procedure is performed with small injections made directly into the veins which cause the veins to collapse. This minimally invasive treatment option has proven to be a safe and effective method to eliminate both the appearance and discomfort associated with spider veins and continues to be the only FDA-approved treatment for this condition.
Recovery from sclerotherapy takes less than 24 hours. Some patients choose to refrain from returning to work for one or two days in order to minimize strain on the treated areas. In fact, this procedure rarely results in more discomfort than a normal injection and typically does not require any medication afterward.
Compression garments may be recommended by your doctor as well as bandages that will need to be worn for one to two weeks. These should not interfere with your lifestyle, but it is best to avoid strenuous activity while you are wearing them. Walking and mild exercise is a good idea during this time to help improve your circulation.
