If you are looking for an orthodontic option that takes not months, not years, but weeks, then you are looking for instant orthodontics. And if you are afraid of wearing a retainer for the rest of your life, have no fear because instant orthodontics does not require the use of a retainer to maintain the quality of its results. But what is instant orthodontics?
Is Instant Orthodontics "Invisalign"?
You may have heard of Invisalign, the clear plastic aligners that gradually move your teeth through a computer-designed sequence. You may wonder whether Invisalign is instant orthodontics. No. Treatment with Invisalign has some benefits over traditional orthodontics because it doesn't have wires or brackets, but Invisalign is not necessarily faster than traditional orthodontics. In most cases, treatment with Invisalign takes the same amount of time as traditional orthodontics.
Is Instant Orthodontics "Accelerated Orthodontics"?
Another development you may know about is "accelerated orthodontics." You may wonder whether instant orthodontics is just a marketing gimmick to describe accelerated orthodontics. No. Accelerated orthodontics is a combination of procedures that utilizes traditional orthodontic treatments and periodontal surgery to quickly change the configuration of your teeth. Even though it is faster than traditional orthodontics, accelerated orthodontics still takes three to eight months to accomplish.
What Is Instant Orthodontics?
So, if it is not Invisalign or accelerated orthodontics, what is instant orthodontics? Instant orthodontics is a completely different solution to crooked teeth. Instead of trying to move your tooth roots, which are held in place by your gums and bones, instant orthodontics just reshapes the visible portion of your smile with porcelain veneers and dental crowns. In addition to speed, instant orthodontics has the benefit of being able to improve the shape and color of your teeth, something traditional orthodontics simply cannot do.
Instant orthodontics gives you a straight, even smile in as few as two office visits. During your first visit, your smile is designed and your teeth are prepared to receive the porcelain veneers and/or dental crowns. This may involve the removal of some of your tooth structure. The more correction your smile needs, the more removal of tooth material you may need. Then impressions are made and sent to a lab to prepare the final restorations.
While the lab is crafting your final restorations, you will wear temporary versions. It's important to talk to your cosmetic dentist about these temporary restorations, because their quality can vary widely among dentists.
These restorations only need to last a few weeks, because by then your final versions will be ready. You will have another dental appointment when your final restorations will be fitted and secured to your teeth, giving you the straighter smile you have been dreaming of.
