What is Arthritis? |
||||
Although any part of the body can be inflamed with arthritis, usual areas that it weakens are the back, neck, hip, knee, or feet. Some conditions can be devastating and even bring life-threatening complications as it may affect other parts of the body like the muscles, bones and internal organs.
Types of Arthritis:
There are more than a hundred types of arthritis. But the most common diagnosed types of it are rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, and osteoarthritis.
1. Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is a disorder where the body’s own immune system attacks body tissues. Most damage occurs to the joint lining and cartilage which involves inflammation of the synovium membrane that surrounds the joint and eventually results erosion of the two opposing bones. The disease often occurs in the fingers, wrists, elbows and knees. It can start affecting people at the age of 20 but commonly concerns females ages 40 and above.
2. Gouty Arthritis
Gouty arthritis or simply “gout” is caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joint cavity, causing inflammation. There is another rare type of gout which is called “pseudogout,” which is caused through the formation of rhomboid crystals of calcium pyrophosphate. Gout in its early stages usually occurs in only one joint, but sooner or later it can suffer many joints and can often become swollen or worse, lose its function. This form of arthritis usually affects males at the age of 30 to 50.
3. Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the disease which is basically acquired from the regular wear and tear of the joint. It affects the larger joints of the body like the back, spine, hip and pelvis, which typically are the weight bearing joints. It begins in the cartilage and eventually leads to the two opposing bones eroding into each other causing the person suffering it with lingering pain. Osteoarthritis is common among people at the age of 50 and above, which 30% are females at the age of 65.
While there are hundred different types of arthritis, one thing is for sure—what is arthritis for all who suffers from it is a trauma to their joints that carries the same ache, distress and inactivity. Arthritis is one huge disorder that all should combat so that men and women of all ages would not suffer the weakening effect of it but enjoy long lasting mobility.
