MSDS sheets only apply to hazardous chemicals and substances that will be used in a workplace setting. A product that will be used by consumers falls under a different regulation and does not require an MSDS. The MSDS is produced to help those in the workplace determine the risks associated with the handling of that specific chemical.
Who is an MSDS for?
An MSDS is designed for the employees who will be working with and handling the substance of concern. It provides information they need to ensure safety while handling the product, such as the personal protective equipment required. It also provides standards for proper storage of the product. The MSDS is also beneficial to the employer so they can be more familiar with the chemicals they are using in their company. Emergency responders such as fire fighters, emergency medical technicians and emergency room personnel also require information from the MSDS to determine the most appropriate method for dealing with the situation or injured person.
What do MSDS sheets look like?
MSDS sheets can vary in looks depending on the company that produced the MSDS and the region where the MSDS will be used. In general, MSDS sheets are usually split into sections regarding each category of hazard such as physical data, first aid measures, toxicological properties, and hazardous ingredients. They can range anywhere from one page to over ten pages, depending on the detail of information included. MSDS sheets may be printed on paper and located in a binder near where the chemicals are stored in the workplace. They may also be in a computerized database available to all workers.
