What Exactly Is Cane Furniture?

Cane furniture is similar to wicker and rattan furniture. Often, furniture manufacturers use these terms interchangeably, but there is a slight difference in the weaves used. Cane and rattan are more interchangeable terms, whereas wicker (although similar) is slightly different.

Some people opt to feature cane furniture prominently in a front room or foyer. It has a rustic, organic look and compliments natural plants and other nature related-decor quite perfectly. This is ideal when a tropical or summer feel is desired. Many would think that this type of look would be something you'd find in Arizona or other southwest regions, but it is actually quite common in all regions of the US.

While this is a traditional look (as opposed to modern or post-modern furnishings), carefully selected cane furniture can be used in a more contemporary settling as well. It can quite nicely compliment a home office or library, an attic, even a bedroom-or off to the side for social seating in a dining area.

You may choose the basic wood finish or you can paint your cane furniture to match the room it's in. It depends on how much of a wood purist you are! Some sticklers would never dare allow their wood furnishings take on an artificial look by painting them a non-wood color! Others are more easygoing and like to experiment to get the right mix of modern colors and styles.

The fact is that cane furniture is actually quite versatile. It is relatively comfortable, but not cushy by any means. For this reason, many pieces of cane furniture will include padding, throw pillows and the like. If not, you can always add your own. You may also use decorative throw blankets to add softness, or have custom padding made to match your other decor.

Another area to place cane furniture is on a covered deck, patio, or sun porch. It adds a homey, comforting touch to any space.

The home is not the only place for cane furniture, either. Many businesses have made good use of it, bringing back a sense of tradition and a country vibe. For example, in a waiting area at a local bank, cane furniture can be placed near the coffee machine or water cooler, to make customers feel at home while they wait or fill out forms.

Hotels (especially bed and breakfast type) are basically famous for using cane furniture in certain areas, although some may consider this passe in recent years. Funeral parlors, hair and nail salons, and restaurants also feature cane furniture in waiting areas for guests. There is something about cane furniture that removes the "clinical" feel in any area of a store or other place of business.

If you are interested in learning more about cane furniture, you can do so online. Many stores will allow you to choose and customize your cane furniture selections without setting foot outside the home. Or you could go to your local department stores or furniture stores and browse the choices there. However, the online stores will naturally be less limited in terms of variety and inventory. You may also be able to find a better price online!
