So we can probably say its safe to say we all agree on this very principle....in the morning, that first look in the mirror isn't exactly a view we necessarily are eager to see. The image starring back at us is often one that we'd like to change...and so part of our morning ritual is taking steps to modify our looks.
This same principle is soooooooo true about the self analysis that should occur for a leader. We have some really poor examples of leaders. We also have some really good leaders. Just like our morning condition though -- in order to improve it, we must first be willing to "man up" and look at it.
Ever look into the mirror, see something that calls your attention even more, and move into the mirror for a closer look? Could be something in your teeth, like the remnants of your midnight snack. Whatever it is - we take a step closer to the counter, and look deeper into the mirror so that we can see better the thing that's caught our attention. THIS IS WHAT LEADERS NEED TO DO if they are to really access their leadership skills and capabilities.
The Bible says, "seek and you shall find." This is the same philosophpy of the man in the mirror....by looking at ourselves in the mirror we begin to see things that we were not previously aware of before or like the example of seeing something and wanting to see it in closer detail, taking a step closer to the mirror, brings into sharper focus those things that we desire to learn more about.
In the morning we may not look our best - but the image we do see reveals an image that is the real deal. It may not be something you want the world to see, but the mirror does provide the tool, which is the image you see of yourself...and this becomes an opportunity to make adjustments to the things you don't like and ultimately make improvements.
Leaders need to look into the mirror with wide open eyes so they can pick out the flaws or imperfections and then take steps to improve in those areas. It isn't the most enjoyable of tasks to do as a leader, however everyone would agree that completing your morning routine is a necessity! When we as leaders take time to look into the mirror we begin to see the things we like and dislike about ourselves. This self awareness is the starting pointing from which we can change the things we don't like and enhance the things we do think are our strengths.
Take some time to look into the mirror today -- find the courage to take a step closer to the mirror and look deeper into the image that stares back at you. If you find some things that you aren't especially proud of....work to change them, if you see some things that are good, work to enhance them. Most of all, remember, without looking into that mirror....
