How Veneers Work

The entire process requires three visits altogether. In the first appointment, you will discuss your candidacy with your dentist. Your dentist will explain the procedure to you, and let you know what you can expect in terms of results and long-term care.
In the second appointment, your dentist will remove a thin layer of enamel from your tooth. This step is painless, but you may be given a topical or local anesthetic to numb your sensitivity. The enamel has to be removed so that the veneer can fit over your tooth; otherwise, the veneer would look bulky and jut out.
After the enamel has been removed, your dentist will make impressions of your teeth, which will be sent to the veneers lab. It will take a couple of weeks for your customized porcelain veneers to be made and returned to your dentist’s office.
In your third dental appointment, your dentist will bond the veneer to your tooth. First, your dentist will check to make sure you are satisfied with the color, and then your dentist may make alterations to the veneer to ensure that it is the size and shape best suited to your smile. The veneer will be attached to your tooth with dental cement. The cement will be painlessly activated with a special light.
After that, your dentist may want to schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure the veneers are bonding successfully.
You should care for your veneer the same way you do with your other teeth. Brush at least twice a day and floss once a day. Your dental veneer can last up to ten years, but will probably have to be replaced at some point.
