What are the Different Types of Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are an alternative to a face lift or any kind of surgical facial procedure that can smooth out deep lines and wrinkles. These dermal fillers are injected under the skin to restore a smoother, more youthful facial complexion. There are two types of dermal fillers you can choose from: temporary or permanent.

Temporary Fillers
Temporary fillers are considered to be very safe since your body absorbs the product gradually over a period of time. As a result, any unwanted side effects are not long lasting. Temporary dermal fillers can be used to address a variety of concerns from fine lines and wrinkles to lost facial volume.

You have a variety of temporary dermal fillers to choose from. They are made from various kinds of man-made and synthetic materials including:
• Hyaluronic Acid Fillers- A very biocompatible substance that is present in every living organism. Hyaluronic acid fillers rarely cause any reactions. Common products that are made from hyaluronic acid include Restylane, Perlane, and Juvéderm.
• Collagen Fillers- The original temporary filler used for cosmetic enhancement. Traditionally, products were derived from bovine (cow) collagen and required an allergy test before treatment; however, newer products offer the advantages of collagen injections without the need for pre-testing.
• Calcium Hydroxylapatite- A mineral that is a major component of bone. Calcium hydroxylapatite is a biocompatible material that dissolves in the body. It is the main component of Radiesse, a longer-lasting temporary dermal filler designed for facial sculpting.
• Collagen Stimulators- Not only adds volume and addresses lines and wrinkles like traditional fillers, but also improves skin texture and tone by stimulating new collagen growth. Sculptra encourages your own collagen to be formed, giving you a similar effect to dermal fillers.

Permanent Fillers
Permanent dermal fillers are not as widely used as temporary fillers because of their longer-lasting effect. The main ones are polymethylmethacrylate such as Artecoll or Artefill and polyacrylamide (Aquamid). Polymethylmethacrylate is made from a mixture of tiny plastic beads and bovine collagen.

When the mixture is injected underneath the skin, the plastic beads become encapsulated in scar tissue. The collagen holds the plastic beads in place, which can then last for months or years after the collagen has dispersed. Aquamid implants are 97% water and are composed of a highly polymerised polyacrylamide gel, which integrates naturally with the body’s own tissue to create instant facial volume.
