During your regularly scheduled examinations with your ophthalmologist, you can discuss ways to help prevent cataracts. During these consultations, your eye doctor will also check your eyes for early indication of cataracts. If caught early, you may be able to undergo treatment before vision difficulties begin. It is important to see your eye doctor at least once every two years before the age of 65, and once yearly thereafter.
Symptoms of Cataracts
If not caught early during your regularly scheduled eye exams, you may develop warning signs of cataracts. Because they are not always visible, it is important to talk to your eye doctor right away if you develop symptoms including:
Cloudy vision
Dim vision
Blurred vision
Difficulties seeing in low light situations
Increased sensitivity to light or glare
Halos around lights
Diminished ability to distinguish colors
Double vision
Frequent prescription eyewear changes
These symptoms can indicate a number of age-related vision disorders, and should be promptly seen to by an experienced ophthalmologist.
Treating Cataracts
The only way to treat cataracts is through a lens exchange surgery. During this surgery, your natural, cloudy lens will be removed and a clear, artificial lens will be put in its place. There are a number of lenses you can choose from. Several of these lenses offer both protection against future cataracts and freedom from prescription eyewear. Talk to your eye doctor about the artificial lenses that will best suit your unique needs during your cataract surgery consultation.
Cataract surgery is a safe and effective way to treat this often unavoidable condition. It is important to treat your cataracts as soon as possible to help reduce your risk for serious vision difficulties down the road.
