Anacondas have probably captured the imagination of human beings ever since man’s first encounter with them. Snakes seem to provide some sort of natural fascination to men. If you doubt this statement, read the book of Genesis in the Old Testament of the Bible. Not only are anacondas snakes, but they are also the largest snakes in the world! The world record for the heaviest snake ever found was a yellow anaconda. In addition Anacondas hold the record for the widest circumference (length around the widest portion) of any snake ever found.
Anacondas, however, are not the longest snake in the world. That distinction belongs to the Reticulated Python of Africa.
Anacondas have been known to eat all sorts of things. Some examples of things which they have eaten include calves, caimans (smaller relative of the crocodile), fish, and even human beings.
Anacondas are indigenous to South America and are considered to be a type of Boa Constrictor. Anacondas are not poisonous, rather they are constrictors. Constrictors kill there prey by biting their prey to grab hold of them and then suffocating there prey to death by squeezing them to death. Most constrictors start swallowing there prey while they are killing it. Also like most snakes the anaconda’s jaws unhinge allowing then to swallow prey much larger then the snake is wide. Anaconda’s like just about all snakes swallow there prey whole. Remember that anaconda’s have been known to each small cows. All constrictors are extremely strong pound for pound, and the Anaconda is the heaviest constrictor in the world. This means that the anaconda is ridiculously strong!!! They are extremely dangerous animals and require an entire of team of people in order to be handled. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should someone attempt to handle an Anaconda without a team of trained people. The two most well known species of Anaconda are the Yellow Anaconda and the Green Anaconda. Other less known species also exist.
While some people do keep Anaconda’s as in captivity it is NOT recommended. Remember that an Anaconda can easily kill a full grown human being. Anacondas should only be kept by experienced handlers who have the proper facilities to house such a large and dangerous animal. Anacondas should be kept away from children and pets and should NEVER be kept inside one’s home. If you are not very experienced with large snakes and do not have a separate building in which to house an Anaconda then owning one as a pet is probably a VERY BAD IDEA. The best and safest place to house anacondas in captivity are ZOOs and other wildlife sanctuaries.
Remember that even baby anacondas will grow up to be GIANT SIZED, DANGEROUS PREDITORS.
