Kitchen remodels are very common remodels as the benefits from them are numerous. Not only is it a very used room, which means that the remodel can be appreciated on a daily basis, but they also are a very good way to appreciate the value of your house. While they do cost money, the reward of a brand new kitchen that is more aesthetically pleasing and more functional is a huge thing.
When remodeling, the first thing to remember is that you are doing this for you. While a longer-term goal may be to add value to your home, do not let that be your guiding light as you will have to live with this kitchen. Also, some of the things that add the most value and are the most expensive can end up looking gaudy and impersonal which in reality, may not add as much value as you think.
The second thing is this: figure out what you can spend. You will need a budget that fits your income and spending abilities. Having a budget will help you stay in control of your new kitchen and will help prevent anything catastrophic from happening to your bank account. Next, you will want to become informed.
The amount of options out there can be overwhelming and it is better to be overwhelmed on your own than with sales people talking to you, trying to sell you the most expensive thing. So get catalogues, research online, go see showrooms and figure out what feel you're going for.
What colors do you like? What appliances are important to you? What function and look do you want? These are all things you should narrow down so that when you're ready to begin shopping, you're prepared.
Next you will want to look for contractors. Contractors can vary in price and experience. Knowing exactly what you want will enable you to give the contractor exact details which will get you a better quote. Getting bids from several contractors is a good idea, and looking them up either through word of mouth or online will help you get a feel for their reputation.
If you know anyone that has used them, see how they felt about the quality of work. Remember that choosing the least expensive option isn't always the best idea. You will get what you pay for. Any contractor should be able to provide licensing information and will be able to tell you what materials they use. They should also be able to provide a list of past customers.
Next, it's time to start the remodel! Never pay for everything beforehand. Laying down a down payment is the safest for you and a 20-30% down payment is pretty typical. You don't want to make the final payment until everything is done and you are satisfied with the work. It will be quite a process and you're bound to feel overwhelmed at times, but following these guidelines should make the entire project a better ordeal.
