I feel that there are three major factors that are holding back the wholesale adoption of voip for business. The three factors are security, quality and connectivity.
Security
The security issues around voip can be divided into three strands.
• DOS or denial of service – this is when the companies phone lines are flooded with too many calls and the system collapses under the weight.
• Listening in – voip systems are open to eavesdropping if they aren’t secured, the system needs to be on a secure network and encrypted.
• Vishing and voip spam is an increasing issue, with the number of fake calls increasing. Having your voip system hijacked and used for vishing could be an enormous problem as could they issue of someone vishing your business via your voip connection.
In order to protect your business voip system from security issues, it needs to be on a secure MPLS network with smart encryption and the ability to block unauthorised devices from being added to the network.
Quality
Issues of quality, lagging delay, and lost connection although are annoying when using voip privately they are not really an issue. Such quality issues are a major stumbling block to the business community. Effective communication is vitally important in business. These issues have scared many a business away from a commitment to switch to a voip based communication system.
Improvements in codecs, software, hard and soft phones have started to eliminate quality issues. Placing your voip services on a dedicated MPLS network will drastically improve the quality of the service. Trying to cut corners by running via your current broadband connection will only result in increasing quality issues.
Connectivity
The size and location of the company’s office or offices will effect the decision to adopt voip for business or to stick with their current communication infrastructure. The more remote and spread out geographically the locations are the greater the importance of a high speed network becomes. The availability of a high speed network is vitally important if the switch is going to be made. Dedicated networks with large reach and fast speeds are becoming increasing common. The future expansion of faster and faster networks into more remote places can really drive the adoption of voip for business.
Take up of voip for business will steadily increase as the security, quality and connections improve. Those companies’s in developed economies have an advantage as the networks are already in place. The result is that the switch to a cheaper voip system a much simpler choice.
