Visiting industrial China from a business woman's point of view

I know many men who travel to industrial China on business but I am always left with the feeling it left no impression on them and that it was just business. Is there really nothing to tell or does the dense smog in the industrial areas of the Pearl River Delta hide any gems to chinese life?

As a business woman, and one of what appears to be very few european business women at that, I was suprised by quite how much of an impression the industrial side to China could leave, and still does each time I return.

Even the travel from Hong Kong to Zhong Shan on the ferry evokes a little trepidiation as I never quite know what to expect. There is almost no opportunity to wander the streets of industrial China and experience the culture directly. Myself and business partner are always generously received by our chinese hosts, to the point that we are almost over protected from the day to day life on the streets. We stay in magnificent hotels of monolithic proportion and more and more are erected all the time. The views from the hotels invariably look out onto construction of more roads and buildings but if if you look beyond you see glimmers of rivers transporting marvellous old boats to another destination. We have on occasions taken it upon ourselves to leave our hotel and drift into the very streets that house these real people functioning behind the industrial world. Us being the only europeans in sight they are always inviting and evoke my desire to know more.

Most days do involve long hours visiting the factory, where we make our pushchair accessory, and many hours in an MPV. The journey to get there is generally perilous and rarely passes without incident on the highway. Whole families, usually on one bicycle (and frequently carrying piles of paper several feet high) swagger across the roads with little attention to their lives! It never ceases to amaze. Toilet habits appear to be communal and 'going public' doesn't appear to bother anyone. Strangely enough though, it is rude to pick your teeth after a meal without covering your mouth!

Despite some dubious chinese cuisine, it has predominently been delicous. Stunning fish to choose from swimming briefly in their tanks before being served up in restaurants the size of terminal Four. An evening is frequently dominated by games of lie dice and appalling kareoke singing sessions. A strange but fair way of not having to make conversation and yet still have fun. There are some less than salubrious establishments that tend not to be frequented by women and thus I clearly cannot comment!

I do however feel secretly proud that I have been privy to these small insights of life within industrial China and know that my experience, despite not including beautiful tourist attractions will remain with me always.
