Let's look into what this wild wetland environment has to offer today's adventurers.
The Everglades is a subtropical ecosystem that consists of a number of unique settings of intense water throughout the wet season, yet much of it is extremely dry while in the hot period. This generates extremes that are fascinating and cyclical, extreme conditions of nature's usual cycles happening elsewhere. The ecosystem begins up around Orlando, Florida by way of the Kissimmee River which moves down until it hits Lake Okeechobee. This specific lake is extremely large, but it is in fact very shallow.
During the wet season, the water from this lake starts to flow down towards the southern tip of the state, until it ends up at the south part of the state where the Atlantic Ocean converges with the Gulf of Mexico. This temporary 'river' that moves to the sea is very slow, but it traverses a swathe of territory that is sixty miles wide. The section of this wetland spanning as far as the eye can see is enough to send chills down the backs of many who have experienced an up close look at it as it seems to go on forever, allowing us a glimpse at a timeless, almost prehistoric slice of life.
What makes the Everglades thrilling to so many visitors, however, is the wildlife. While Miami, sugar cane fields and other encroachments of man have certainly changed quite a bit throughout the years that is now being reversed as the wetlands are valued today, there are many animals to see.
One of the most obvious attractions are the alligators. These rare and tremendous reptiles attract tourists from all over the world who come to see them in their natural environment. Besides the American Alligator, there is also the American Crocodile, the Florida Panther and the West Indian manatee to see. These creatures are considered some of the rarest in North America and are definitely an attraction.
The nature hiking and outdoor camping enjoyed in this area is what many people come for, but you should also keep in mind that there are motels, hotels and bluegreen resorts in the vicinity if you care to seek lodging in more comfortable settings. Whatever it is that you think you are looking to do, the Everglades definitely has a great deal to offer.
Miami and Orlando are within driving distance so you always have plenty of activities if you wish to have a break from your outdoor adventure.
As you can see, the Everglades is a national treasure by all accounts. This is one area of the country where you will be sure to see a lot of remarkable critters and get a good look at all there is to get pleasure from within this most tropical part of the Us.
