Some of the materials used in roofing are as follows:
1. Asphalt shingles – Made up of roofing felt, which is saturated with asphalt and granules of minerals.
2. Wood shingles – Gives long life and attractive, anyhow it should be treated with a preservative for every five years.
3. Slate shingles – These are made out of blocks of slate, and then the blocks of slate are separated into shingles. The material used in this roofing is so expensive and the installation charges are high.
4. Metal roofing – It has become more modernized today and it is mostly comprised of steel or aluminum. It is very cheap, long-lasting and can be attractive too, when it is painted.
5. Clay tiles – When it is installed, it gives a varied appearance. It is fire proof and resistant to all the kinds of weather, but at the same time expensive too.
6. Built-up roofs – It is made up of layers of roofing felt and hot tar. It is often used on the top of the commercial buildings.
Types of roofs - Weather, geographic condition and architectural style of the home determine the type and the design of the roof to be used in homes.
Flat: It is easy to build and requires less labor and materials, when compared to other types.
Gabled: This type has two slopes forming a peak at the top and it should be braced tightly, otherwise it gets collapsed due to high winds. It is easy to remove the snow from the gable. There exist two kinds of gable such as cross and front gable.
Gambrel: When installed, it gives the appearance of a bell, it may be facing either sideward or frontward.
Hipped: It is more aerodynamic enabling it to withstand high winds. It is most commonly used in bungalow type homes.
The material and the type of the roof should be chosen, considering the following criteria;
- Cost.
- Availability.
- Style.
- Durability.
- Longevity.
- Resistance to fire.
Maintenance of roofs - If you maintain it properly, the roof will remain intact, waterproof and free from damage. Make sure the roof is water tight; attic should be insulated well, and be sure the attic is ventilated well.
