You know, as a stand-up comic, my goal was to get the largest laughs in the shortest time possible.

So, I developed jokes and material that had a very short set up which went directly to the punch-line (pay off). When I became a speaker and realized that I needed my content to have a powerful effect on my audience, I used specific pauses in my speeches to do just that.

Here Are Five Reasons To Use The 'Power of The Pause!'

1. When you pause you are creating the illusion that right after you start speaking again your audience is receiving fresh information.

2. When you pause you are giving the impression (and it might be true) that you are 'in the moment.' This shows your listeners that you are not delivering them 'canned' content.

3. Using the pause...effectively takes away from the normal machine gun fire style of heavy content dumping on your captivated audience.

4. Pausing allows you to lead the audience in a specific way. When you pause you are in essence telling your audience, 'I've just contemplated on something important...perhaps you should too!'

5. If you're using notes, strategically placed 'pauses' will show your audience that you're being spontaneous and NOT reading from a script.

Listen to the great orators of our time like Ronald Regan or Bill Clinton. They prove that once you master the pause you can deliver the shortest amount of words in a very compelling fashion. Using pauses correctly proves that sometimes it's NOT what you say that carries a lot of weight... but what you don't say.

Commit to trying it in your own speeches and presentations and let me know how it works for you!
