Since the dawn of civilization, from Roman to Greek societies, even ancient Mayans and Aztecs, all of them have a highly developed calendar system that helped them identify nature’s transformation such as the changing of the season, episodes of eclipses, time of sunrise and sunset, the different phases of the moon- things that make a difference in their way of life. Early Egyptians even have a calendar system to help them predict when the stars align themselves which marks the time that they start building their famous pyramids.
One of the most important uses of calendars is signified in the planting and harvesting of crops. A calendar suggests to farmers when to plant to yield the most harvest. Calendars also provide the time for natural irrigation to occur (such as in the case of the rainy season or the advent of hot weather).
Calendars are also made to shape society and place people in positions of power. The Christian Church made a great deal out of the early calendars to indicate a unified date for the celebration of Easter. Hence, the Gregorian calendar was adopted in 1582. This calendar is until now, considered the unifying and most widely used calendar of all time. Even non-Christians like the Chinese and the people of India use the Gregorian calendar with their day-to-day activities, only shifting to their traditional calendars to mark their individual religious holidays.
Nowadays, calendars are made to help us keep track of the months and different seasons each year. A calendar helps us keep track of our day to day activities. It helps in keeping our modern world organized and gives a systematic way of doing our work and activities.
Calendars keep track of special days and holidays, be it Christian or otherwise. It provides a global unification of special events and celebrations. It helps countries to cross boundaries by providing dates for a unified observance of festivities.
As individuals, we use calendars to establish our work schedules, our appointments, and important family functions and events. Hence, our calendars are physical manifestations of our life, our lifestyle, our personal history. One would be able to learn about a person by just glancing through a personal calendar.
Modern
calendars are now more functional and interactive. A calendar does not anymore stay as passive aids in our lives. With the advent of technology, we now have electronic calendars integrated in our desktops, pda’s and mobile phones that remind us of our days and events automatically. They’ve become very popular these days because they are portable, easy to use, and convenient.
