Unlock your Dongle to unlock some savings!

Data roaming charges whilst abroad are running up high bills for customers, but could unlocking your handset or dongle save your pocket?

If you use the internet on your mobile phone or on your laptop via a dongle while you are abroad you may well know that foreign data roaming charges are expensive, and browsing the internet or checking your email can leave you with a hefty bill on your return home.

For example Three charge customers 10p per mb for out of bundle modem usage in the UK. If you were to use the same 1mb whilst abroad this cost would rocket up to £6!

It is therefore no surprise that consumers are making a stand and using international sim cards instead of their UK sim card whilst abroad to keep costs down. Of course you need to ensure your mobile phone is unlocked so that you can use an international sim card whilst abroad. But what about your dongle? Do not fear as dongles can now also be unlocked, and therefore the sim card can be changed for an international sim card resulting in lower data roaming charges. It can cost around £40 to get your dongle unlocked, but the savings in the long run out weigh the one off fee.

EU commissioner Viviane Reding has warned networks that they must respond to consumer concerns regarding high international data roaming charges by reducing costs at wholesale and retail levels.

But unfortunately it seems that consumers are not willing to wait for networks to take into account what Viviane Reding has proposed, and are taking action themselves by reducing their data roaming charges via mobile and dongle unlocking.
