The quality of your smile, though, is not determined entirely by the condition of your teeth. The small lines and indentations around your mouth also contribute greatly to the character of your smile, making you look more open and friendly.

What Are Dimples?

One common characteristic that adds individuality to your smile is the appearance of dimples. Dimples appear as small indentations in the cheeks when you smile.

A natural dimple is an inherited trait, and actually occurs due to an abnormality in the muscles of the cheeks. In the past, if you were not born with dimples, you would never have them. Today, though, a relatively simple plastic surgery procedure can provide dimples that will enhance and brighten your natural smile.

How Dimple Creation Surgery Works

If you wish to have dimples created in your smile, the first step is to consult with an experienced plastic surgeon about how and where the dimples will be placed. You and your doctor can evaluate your smile and determine where placement of a dimple or dimples will most enhance your appearance and achieve the look you wish.

To create the dimple, the surgeon places an incision on the inside of your cheek, which is then sewn shut with a dissolving suture. As the muscle of the cheek heals, the incision will show on the outside of the cheek as a dimple, visible when you smile.

Dimple creation takes about an hour. Recovery after the procedure can take a few weeks, until the muscle fully heals and the stitches dissolve. A liquid diet is recommended for the first few days as the incision on the inside of your cheek will remain swollen and tender.
