Gilding is the process by which gold leaf, a very thin layer of gold, is applied to various materials. In the case of picture framing, the gold leaf is brushed or smoothed on to a wooden frame.

Bole, clay based color, is applied to the wooden frame to ensure a smooth surface and create different background effects revealed through the gold as it is brushed away. Gilding is one of the truly hands on processes of picture and art framing. When done well the effect is a vibrant glowing gold frame with the subtle richness and depth of the bole showing through.

In the case of the last frame I did I used five different colors of bole. I layered different pieces of wood and built the frame for that piece. Then the gold gets layered on and you remove varying degrees of the gold so the color of the bole comes through and marries with the picture.

And you create this individual frame for this specific painting instead of when you go to the other gilding places, they will have a wall up there and that's their selection of gilding and let's pick out one. I will really delve into making the right shape wood for the frame to encapsulate the picture and really show it off to its fullest and pull out all the guns to make this thing work. It's something you really can't put a value on; you do this out of desire and passion."
