Types and Severity of TBI |
||||
|
The most commonly severe types of traumatic brain injury are those that result in hematoma, or bleeding in or around the brain. Some types of hematoma can result in long-term damage or comas, and those who suffer severe traumatic brain injuries can even die from the condition. |

Rating Traumatic Brain Injury
Not all traumatic brain injuries are life-threatening, but many of them are permanently debilitating. Traumatic brain injuries are measured on the Glasgow Coma Scale, a scale which rates brain injuries from3-15, with 15 being very mild and 3 being extremely severe. The Glasgow Coma Scale rates eye, verbal, and motor responsiveness. If you suffer a traumatic brain injury rated a 15 you may only have suffered a mild concussion, where a 3, the lowest possible number, indicates a very deep coma or death.
The severity of your or your loved one’s injury can have an effect on the amount of compensation you deserve according to the law. However, the fact that a traumatic brain injury has occurred does not automatically entitle you to compensation, and as in any court case fault must be determined before compensation can be awarded.
Finding Legal Help
When seeking compensation after a traumatic brain injury, the first step you should take is to look for a lawyer with experience working on brain injury cases. Familiarity with this type of case can mean the difference not only in how much compensation you receive, but whether your case goes to court at all. In some cases it may be preferable that your case be settled out of court, but in other cases the compensation may be greater if a judge or jury is involved.
