This New York attraction is one of the most popular, especially in the summer time. In order to get there, you are required to take a ferry to either Liberty Island or Ellis Island, which is in close proximity to the monument grounds.
On October 28, 1986, The Statue of Liberty was honored to celebrate its 100th birthday of existence. In fact, every year on this date, the Park Service celebrates her birthday.
Did you know, that when she came from France, that she was shipped in 350 pieces? After arriving in America, her assembly took four months.
This monument is made of copper, steel, and concrete. On her crown, there are 25 windows that represent gemstones. These gemstones come from the earth and the rays from heaven. These seven rays on her crown stand for the world’s seven seas and continents.
The Statue of Liberty also has a tablet that she holds in her left hand, which says, “July 4, 1776”. That was the day when America achieved their freedom, hence the Independence Day holiday on July 4.
Another attraction in New York that is worth noting is the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. This museum, of course, is located on Ellis Island, which is in the New York Harbor.
Ellis Island is well known for the many immigrants that passed through there and were processed between the years 1892 – 1954. The European immigrants came across the Atlantic Ocean by way of an ocean liner.
The American Family Immigration History Center is located on Ellis Island. Here is where you can find out additional information on the immigrants and their genealogy.
It will take you more than a day to see the immigrant experience. There are many displays, exhibits, tours and other events, that you just would not be able to soak it all in one setting. There is one exhibit that is recommended if this is your first time visiting the museum.
After you visit the museum, you will have experienced an interesting trip back in time. Both the Statue of Liberty and The Ellis Island Immigration Museum and two attractions in New York City that are worth seeing more than one time.
