Of late, the trucking industry happens to be in the midst of its most distressful ever labor shortage in the history of the industry itself. As companies have begun to improve their recruiting methods, they have now started concentrating on one category of potential workers – the baby boomers. Yes, this is definitely a match made in financial heaven!

‘So, how’s the traffic doing today?’ ‘If you go ‘sand-bagging’ you should know that there is a full-blown bear taking pictures in the southbound’. ‘Watch out, or he might do a flip-flop’. Now, if you have no idea what all this is about, then you’re probably not a trucker. But, you could be a trucker, especially if you happen to be a baby boomer. So, if you are a 50+ citizen and want a change in scene, or have gone through what you would call ‘a midlife crisis’ and hate wearing three-piece suits every single day, then the trucking industry will definitely interest you. Not only will you be able to put on your favorite pair denims and a t-shirt while working, but you will also get to travel throughout the country.

As a fit baby boomer in the trucking industry, you will get to mingle with different people at all times. What’s more, if you absolutely love traveling, then trucking will feel like you’re on a paid vacation!

50 year olds and 60+ year olds are just what the industry in the United States is looking for. Being faced with what the experts call as the worst ever shortage in labor in the history of trucking, trucking firms and companies are now desperately hiring fit baby boomers who are looking out for a second career. The trucking industry is now consistently looking towards hiring and retaining this pool of mature workers.

The American Trucking Association (ATA) commissioned different recruitment firms and agencies to come up with a new baby boomer campaign, and the baby boomer oriented groups practically went berserk over the video that portrayed trucking as being akin to freedom. Such campaigns have now become the norm for other industries that are in need of more workers and would like to target the baby boomer generation.

In the former half of 2006, trucking companies 50+ and 60+ hirings were up by nearly 85 percent of the previous year. Most of the trucking companies will tell you that baby boomers have all served as the best employees.

The baby boomer, being a mature worker is far more industrious than his/her younger counterpart. In addition, baby boomers have proven to be fast learners and are quite responsive to the needs and desires of their customers as well as the trucking industry on the whole, they are safe and professional drivers, they have well-developed judgment skills, a sound sense of responsibility and strong work ethics. Since the baby boomers are in need of the job and their pension funds are all drying up and their nest eggs are shrinking, trucking companies are offering interesting benefits – and the salaries can even exceed $60,000 per year. Yes, an increasing number of baby boomers have begun to return to the workforce due to the drastic changes in their pension funds, in the actual structure of these pensions, the rising medical expenses and the instability of the social security.
