Trekking in Darjeeling

Some of the most scenic treks of India among its magnificent hills are offered by the gorgeous Himalayan region of Darjeeling.

Mid March to the first week of June and last week of September to December are the 2 trekking seasons in this region. From March to June the flowers are in full bloom and it rains sometimes, during the summers. September to December is also fun, but it is very cold and it may also snow in some regions during the winter period.

Thousand meters to 4000 m is the range of the trekking altitudes in Darjeeling. So, clothes for low tropical areas to high altitudes will have to be carried. Don’t forget to carry a raincoat as it may rain sometimes in the higher altitudes.

Food, water and trekking equipment is available every 15 Kms in trekking huts, in some places in Darjeeling. In some places, food and water is scarce. Trekking equipment such as beds and tents may not be available during the peak season. So, your own bed and tent may have to be carried. You will have to carry all the equipment even if you stay on your own.

The DGHC adventure tourism office sells the trekking equipment at very reasonable rates. This equipment is otherwise very expensive.
This Himalayan region has an itinerary for trekking which is as follows. You can start from Darjeeling to Maneybhanjyang to Tonglu, on day 1. This is an 11 Kms trek. You can proceed from Tonglu to Sandakphu, on day 2. This is a 20 Kms trek.
