Teeth can be straightened with traditional braces or Invisalign®. The treatment that is right for you will depend on how severe your orthodontic problems are. Both treatments are very effective at straightening teeth and have different advantages. It is best to speak with an experienced dentist about your smile to discover which treatment is right for you.
About Traditional Braces
Traditional braces are the most common way of straightening teeth, and are widely used by dentists for patients of all ages. Braces gently straighten teeth using constant pressure from wire and brackets to guide the teeth into a more correct position.
With traditional braces, metal brackets are bonded to the front of all of your teeth. The metal brackets connect each tooth to a single metal wire. Tiny rubber bands are wrapped around each bracket and the wire to hold it in place. The gauge of the wire will increase with each dental visit as your teeth get closer to their proper positions.
Traditional braces are a great option for patients who have an overbite, underbite, or whose teeth are over crowded. Some patients may need braces to meet their specific teeth-straightening needs.
About Invisalign®
Most adults with orthodontic problems decide not to straighten their teeth because they do not want to deal with the inconvenience and aesthetic disadvantages of traditional metal braces. Adults may feel that traditional braces are not professional-looking, or are too embarrassed to wear them because traditional braces are usually associated with children and teenagers. Invisalign is the perfect compromise for adults to straighten their teeth without feeling embarrassed.
Invisalign utilizes clear, plastic trays that gradually straighten teeth. The trays are custom created for you and fit comfortably within your mouth. You can remove them for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing your teeth, or if you are conducting a business meeting. The trays must be worn for approximately 22 hours a day.
Invisalign can correct over crowded teeth, overbite, underbite, and large gaps in teeth. Your cosmetic dentist will help you determine if Invisalign is the best option for you.
