According to a Toyota press release, there are two recalls which involve the sticking of gas pedals in Toyota models. One type of sticking accelerator issue is caused by a single gas pedal supplier. This supplier was used for some models of the Rav4, Corolla, Matrix, Avalon, Camry, Highlander, Tundra and Sequoia. However, not all vehicles of these models are involved in the recall. Camrys, Corollas, Rav4s, and Highlanders with VIN numbers beginning with “J” are not affected by this recall, as they used a separate supplier.

The second recall involves floor mat entrapment, meaning that the gas pedal becomes stuck under the floor mat when pressed to the floor. This recall involves certain models of the Camry, Avalon, Prius, Tacoma, Tundra, Highlander, Corolla, Venza, and Matrix, as well as Lexus IS 250, IS 350, and ES 350.

Gas Pedal Sticking Different from Sudden Acceleration

These types of malfunctions are not the same as sudden acceleration issues, which are caused by a malfunction in the electronics which control the powertrain. Gas pedal entrapment or sticking may seem similar to sudden acceleration, but is a mechanical error, not electronic.

Recently, the media have reported incidents of gas pedals sticking on Toyota vehicles all across the U.S., but even if you drive a car from a different manufacturer you should know what to do when you are in the driver’s seat of a runaway vehicle. Many accidents are made worse by the driver panicking or simply not knowing how to respond when a vehicle accelerates suddenly or the gas pedal sticks.

What to Do in a Runaway Vehicle

If your car becomes out of control due to sudden acceleration or the gas pedal sticking, you should follow these steps:

1. Put the car in neutral, allowing it to rev without increasing speed.
2. Move the car out of traffic and park it in a safe place.
3. Put the vehicle in park and turn off the car.

If these steps are not effective in this order, you may turn off the car to cut the power to the accelerator, but you should be aware that this may cause you to lose steering capabilities or negatively affect your ability to brake. Turning off the car should be a last resort in the case of sudden acceleration or gas pedal sticking.

At no time should you attempt to lean down and un-stick the gas pedal by hand. Instead, keep your hands on the steering wheel and your eyes on to road to enable yourself to avoid other cars and objects while putting the car in neutral and allowing it to come to a stop.
