Top 10 UK driving facts |
||||
1.Human error accounts for 90% of all accidents in Britain. You should never drive when you are tired, particularly at night, and always stick to the speed limits.
2.If you prefer to drive at night to avoid heavy traffic, make sure you are well rested. Driver fatigue accounts for thousands of accidents each year, as tiredness severely affects your concentration and driving skills.
3.Always be aware of blind spots. Wing mirrors and rear view mirrors must be properly adjusted so you can see as much behind you and beside you as possible. You must always look over your shoulder, particularly on a dual carriageway or motorway to make sure there are no vehicles in your way before manoeuvring.
4.Drive with both hands on the wheel to ensure you have maximum control over the vehicle in case of an accident.
5.Avoid road rage completely. If another driver has cut you up, or if your own driving has nearly caused an accident, never get involved in arguments. Avoid hand gestures, and let the other driver pass. Never pursue another vehicle at speed or you could end up causing an accident and injuries to yourself and other drivers.
6.Always have your car serviced at least every 12 months, and carry out simple checks, including tyres, oil, water yourself. Also check regularly that indicators and lights are working. If you suspect there is a serious fault with your car, take it to a qualified mechanic as soon as possible to be checked over.
7.Distractions while driving can cause accidents. Pull over at a safe place if you are distracted by noisy kids or your mobile phone ringing. Also, if you want something to eat or drink, donīt attempt to do it at the wheel.
8.Always keep your distance from the car in front. Choose a landmark in the distance, such as a road bridge, and count from 0 when the car in front passes it. You should be able to count to at least 2 before your car passes the same landmark. If not, you are travelling too close.
9.Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Even one alcoholic drink can affect you, and your reactions are likely to be impaired. If you want to drink, choose a designated driver or book a taxi.
10.If you have to make essential journeys in wintry conditions, stick to the motorways and A roads, which will have been treated. Always carry de-icer in your car and keep a shovel, a warm coat, a warm pair of boots and a fully charged mobile with you, in case of break down.
If you have had a car accident which was caused by someone else, you should first seek medical help for your injuries, then contact a personal injury solicitor for free advice and guidance about claiming compensation. Choose a solicitor who works on a no win, no fee basis, and one who will pay you 100% of the compensation.
