Tooth Whitening: Take Home vs. 'Laser'

Your cosmetic dentist wants to help you get the whitest teeth no matter what your schedule or preferences are. Most often you can choose between an in-office tooth whitening procedure and a take-home tooth whitening kit, which you use on your own.

There are a number of differences between the procedures so most cosmetic dentists would advise you to compare take home vs. laser before choosing.

Laser Tooth Whitening in About an Hour

One of the benefits of in-office ‘laser’ tooth whitening is that the procedure can be completed in about an hour. For most patients, this single treatment whitens their teeth satisfactorily. During this procedure the cosmetic dentist applies a gel or shield to your gums to protect them from irritation. The bleaching agent is then applied to your teeth.

The ‘laser’ is not a laser at all. Rather, it is a bluish colored light that accelerates the action of the bleaching agent. The newer lights are cool and avoid causing tooth sensitivity that previous warmer lights caused. This entire process takes about an hour, and you can go home with a bright smile.

Some stains are more difficult to remove and may take several treatments to fully whiten.

Take Home Teeth Whitening Kits Require Commitment

Over-the-counter teeth whitening kits use relatively weak bleaching solutions and one-size-fits all bleaching trays. Their effectiveness is significantly less than the professional bleaching kits your cosmetic dentist provides, so the following refers only to professional strength kits.

Home bleaching kits come with bite trays that are custom fitted to your teeth, and use a 10% bleaching solution. This solution is weaker than the solution used in the dental office treatment. That has advantages and disadvantages.

One advantage is that the weaker solution is less likely to cause teeth sensitivity or irritate gums and soft tissues. Another advantage is cost. You are not using the dental office space or the practitioner’s skills and time, so an at-home teeth bleaching kit may be a good choice for you.

One disadvantage is that your home bleaching procedure may take two or three weeks to complete, and you must follow your instructions consistently if you hope to have satisfactory results. If you tend to slack off on tedious routines, you may not get the best results. You will need to wear the trays two to four hours a day and that may be difficult to schedule. Another disadvantage is that, unmonitored by the dentist, your gums may become irritated, even from the 10% solution.
