TMD/TMJ Symptoms

Making an accurate diagnosis is a constant challenge for doctors and dentists simply because so many diseases and disorders present similar symptoms. Dentists with advanced neuromuscular dental training are a breed apart from other dentists and doctors.

Neuromuscular training enables dentists to accurately diagnose temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) based on symptoms that may have been misdiagnosed by physicians.

Tingling or numbness in hands or arms: Right away you might think of a pinched nerve. Because of this it is easy to think the cause is a cervical spine problem or other shoulder, arm or hand nerve problem. But when a misaligned jaw causes muscle spasms, these can compress the nerves in the face, jaw, neck and shoulders, producing similar symptoms. You could spend months or years in treatment that never comes close to addressing TMD as the cause. Consequently, despite treatment your symptoms will return as often as the muscle spasms do.

Teeth that have become sensitive, sore, worn, cracked or loose: Many people have had extensive dental work, such as root canals, done when they were not the cause of the pain. Neuromuscular dentists are trained to diagnose TMD when it is the problem, and differentiate when that source is TMD. A misaligned jaw can cause bite problems that result in pain, bruxism, loose and damaged teeth. Likewise, bite problems can be the cause of TMD. Identifying the correct cause will eliminate the pain and preserve your teeth.

Headaches misdiagnosed as migraines: Migraines are a common misdiagnosis for headaches caused by TMD. The misaligned jaw can cause spasms and pain to the nerves of the face, neck and shoulders. This pain can become so severe that it can mimic migraine headache pain. When your migraine treatment fails to relieve your pain, seek help from a neuromuscular dentist.

Depression: Depression is a common symptom among TMD sufferers. This depression is believed to be caused by chemical changes that occur in patients who have chronic pain. Depression can be caused, or worsened by long-standing failure to diagnose the cause of the pain.

Tinnitus and ear pain: Our jaw joints are located right next to our ears. TMD can cause pain that radiates to our ears mimicking an ear infection or inner ear problem.

Jaw locking, clicking or popping: TMD can cause a jaw to lock in place, or make noises as it moves because it is misaligned and unable to move freely as it should.
