TMD and Tooth Destruction

Traditional physicians often overlook or forego treating TMD to eliminate pain. They frequently misdiagnose and misapply treatments for chronic facial pain. Tooth destruction is one of the more obvious signs of TMD and can be treated effectively by a qualified neuromuscular surgeon.

Pound for pound, the jawbone is the most powerful joint in your body. It is the hinge that is responsible for chewing, talking, swallowing, and a host of other activities, placing it under enormous stress every day. The confluence of all the muscles, nerves, and blood vessels frequently do suffer pain and inflammation in a group of disorders loosely described as temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. One of the primary causes of TMD is tooth destruction due to grinding, or trauma. The loss of a tooth, or tooth surface can upset the balance of the jaw, which can cause pain in a number of areas.

Many people suffer pain that they do not even relate to problems with their TMD. Many signs and symptoms seem to be unrelated, therefore treatment is delayed or misapplied, ignoring the underlying problem altogether. Due to the proximity of the trigeminal nerve, which enervates much of the functions of the face and head, symptoms that may not seem related to inflammation of the TMJ may actually be related to TMD. Neuromuscular dentists are specially trained to identify and treat the underlying causes of TMD to relieve the pain for good. Some of the symptoms include:

• Migraines
• Cluster headaches
• Sinus headache
• Face pain
• Neck pain
• Ringing in the ears
• Locked jaw
• Tenderness
• Inflammation

Frequently, the underlying causes of TMD contribute to a downward or degenerating chain reaction. One of the leading causes of TMD is bruxism, or tooth grinding. Many people do not even realize they grind their teeth at night; they just wake with sore muscles and tooth destruction. The resulting tooth destruction cause an uneven bite further knocks the jaw out of alignment causing further pain and more stress.

Some of the causes of tooth destruction leading to TMD may include:
• Bruxism, or teeth grinding
• Trauma
• Tooth decay

The diagnoses and treatment of the underlying causes of TMD is often difficult. Thanks to advances in technology neuromuscular dentists are able to find the ideal alignment of you jaw at rest and develop a treatment plan to get the jaw back into proper alignment. Some of the treatments used include:

• TENS electrical stimulation
• Physical therapy
• Oral appliances

Because of the constant enormous pressure put on teeth during chewing, tooth destruction can often occur. Tooth destruction, whether destroyed by trauma, decay, or bruxism can be repaired with various dental procedures. Tooth implants are used to replace lost teeth, which is one way to bring the jaw back into proper alignment. Teeth that are ground down can be built back up with instant orthodontia and other cosmetic dentistry options.
