Tips to get into the often difficult music industry as a start-up band |
||||
|
I have previously worked as a music journalist for an online magazine, reviewing upcoming acts and attending local gigs. For this job, I was based in a small cramped office in Leeds creating semi-weekly issues and writing an online blog. |

Here are just some of my tips for entering the music industry and being successful, no matter when the band started, history of gig venues or prominence in the region.
5. Subscribe to a variety of online blogs/magazines: Whilst NME and Kerrang are generally considered THE music magazines for the average consumer, there are many other magazines to choose from, which can provide stories with which to derive news and gather information from. Online blogs written and published independently can also provide current and immediate news before any other magazines; however ensure that the blogger is reliable and has provided trustworthy sources. This can help to get you insider information that you can use to improve your band.
4. Sign up to Last.fm, promote your band: Much more than just a website that details what you are listening to, Last.fm is a powerful tool as it allows you to create a band page, add any recorded songs and stream them for free, as well as linking to download purchase. Whilst you can create band pages on other sites such as Facebook, using Last.fm is the most recognised way to publicise your band.
3. Keep a frequent blog: Whilst you might think that writing prowess is not important and that it is all about the music, blogging is an immediately effective way to improve your SEO ranking and fully publicise your band. Google is a vital factor in making your band more popular and a good SEO strategy is very helpful – but, you should write blogs on industry news and music activity as this will be more interesting to readers.
2. Sign up to as many newsletters/small bands and attend festivals: Small bands, whilst not attracting as much popularity or publicity, are a fantastic way of improving your chance of success by latching onto their potential popularity. It can also help to make obtaining gig spaces even easier. Before attempting to break out, it is useful to build local popularity. My experience working an office in Leeds has shown me how a lot of regional bands have improved and evolved over the years.
1. Make yourself known in the industry: Much like starting your own business, a large amount of your success will depend on who you know. It can be highly beneficial to attend music industry networking events and talk to successful experts. A simple phone number or e-mail address can be your ticket to breaking into the music industry.
Whilst some of your success will depend on how critically-acclaimed your music is and the innovation you are showing (except in the case of a lucky break), these tips can significantly improve your band's potential.

Leeds is possibly one of the best places that I have ever worked and I found all my time working there very enjoyable; however Leeds is a markedly expensive place to live, as rents are increasing and there is a lack of supply for young professionals. My experience in an office in Leeds has shown me a lot of local bands that made it big.
