For this reason, the Dodge's OBD system can supply a bit of guidance. It will not solve your problem, but it might reduce the amount of time it takes to find out the source of the problem.
You'll need OBD 2 scanner, Pencil and paper

Prepare for troubleshooting ahead of time. This contains bookmarking relevant pages with your OBD 2 scanner user manual. You will need exact translations for generic codes used in all OBD 2 compliant cars and light trucks. You will also need to go onto the Internet and find out Dodge's unique and supplemental OBD 2 codes. The Dakota's user manual lacks of this information. Print out the coding lists. Place both the printed material and your OBD 2 scanner’s user manual into the Dakota's navigator's seat.

Link your OBD 2 scanner to your Dakota's DLC port. The DLC port will be placed near to the left kick panel and under the driver's side instrument panel. If your scanner has an auto-activation feature, it will power itself on when it senses a connection with the Dakota's computer. If not, you should need to power it on yourself.

Power the Dakota's electrical system on. This will "wake up" the car's diagnostic computer. Relying on the scanner you own, you may have to also begin the Dakota's engine.

Enter a command to retrieve the OBD 2 codes from the Dakota's computer. The button layout on diagnostic scanners differs by brand. Also, some scanners are preset to automatically retrieve codes. Anyhow, consult your specific scanner's manual for the exact instructions.

Scroll through the retrieved codes and found all the ones flagged by "trouble" status. Write down these codes. Always investigate trouble codes first. These are frequently recorded faults, and they are the reason why the service engine light goes on.

Write down any remaining codes onto your paper. These will be "pending" codes. They are still faults, but they have not happened with the regularity of the trouble codes. Still, this could be a sign of developing problems.

Look up the materials you put in the navigator's seat. Consult the coding descriptions and definitions and write them down. Power off the Dakota and remove the ignition key. Detach the scanner from the DLC port.

Open the Dakota's engine compartment and troubleshoot the engine referring to the problems on your list. Draw a line through both code and description once you have cleared them from consideration.

Prepare for troubleshooting by locating the check engine light flash codes online. You will not find this information in the Dakota's user manual. Print out the code list and place it in the Dakota's navigator's seat.

Put the key into the ignition, turn the key back and forth in the following sequence: on-off-on-off-on, within less than five seconds

Count how many times the check engine light flashes. Dodge’s flash codes are made of only two numbers. For instance, code 53 will consist of five flashes, a pause and three additional flashes. The flashes will be of equal length, and there will be a longer pause between separate flash codes. Write it down all of the code numbers.

Look up the coding descriptions and definitions you just printed out. Copy them near to their corresponding code numbers.

Power off the Dakota and remove the key from the ignition. Open the engine compartment and troubleshoot the engine base on your diagnose just now. I am glad to communicate with you, if you are interested in OBD 2 scanner.
