He has over 40 years of full-time experience in the general contracting field, covering all aspects of construction with a specialty in the kitchen and bath area. Here, Pinsley gives his top tips for building a handicapped bathroom that does the job, and does it well.

Dignity and safety should not have to come at the expense of personal taste or comfort, which is why we offer handicapped bathrooms that can suit any level of comfort, taste and need.

Handicapped bathrooms need to be not only more accessible, but safer as well. Building a personalized handicapped bathroom depends on the special needs of that physically challenged person. The quadriplegic will have a personal aid; the paraplegic will most likely be able to take care of himself.

The extreme elderly will also need an aid to help him. But, though the bathroom is handicapped equipped, it can still be slippery, so it has to be really specific. To do so, my top tips would be:

1. Understanding the person’s needs
2. Designing a bathroom that delivers what it promises
3. Making a bathroom that is accessible yet safe
4. Having necessities such as slip-proof flooring and grab bars

I had a case last week, a lady called up who was in her late 80s, and really should be living in an assisted living center. However, she said that she wanted to continue living in her own house, so we decided that we would try and do what she wanted. We could only build her a wet room as she wanted a shower she could walk into with her walker and also sit down in her chair, but that was impossible unless she had a wet room.

At First Rate Renovations, one thing that we now offer is a walk-in bathtub, which features an exterior door that enables the user to walk straight into the tub. It’s a lot safer as it is a lot more difficult to slip, either on the floors or when getting in and out of the tub. We do our best to offer walk-in tubs in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes, and also offer a first-rate design and installation service.
