Rooms like the living room or the den are used by all members of the family and need ample light. Ambient lighting, which is the main source of light in a room, is best for such large rooms. The usual ways to plan ambient lighting is by using wall lighting like sconces, overhead lighting like chandeliers and lamps wherever needed like table lamps and floor lamps. When placing floor lamps, be sure to place them out of the area for foot traffic as they could tip over. The easiest way is to start with the largest source of light and then add accent lighting to spaces where lights are needed.
For other important rooms like the kitchen and study areas, task lighting is a good option. For these rooms, use adequate lighting so that you will not have to strain your eyes while studying or cooking. A desk lamp or task light is ideal. In a room like a kitchen where table space is at a premium, use chandeliers and pendant lamps or track lighting. Though LED and fluorescent lighting is popular these days, they don’t provide the ambience of traditional soft lighting. A good way to figure out how to place lights is to have one light every four to six square feet on average. Study areas can also have floor lamps if the light from the ceiling is not sufficient.
The bathroom is a space that has very special lighting needs. The bathroom needs bright ambient light but there is also the need for mood lighting on some occasions. You can place bright fluorescent lights near the mirror to eliminate shadows. Other lights can have dimmer switches when you want soft lighting. Candles are another great way to create accent lighting in the bath.
Whether you need a crystal chandelier or a stylish floor lamp, remember to consider form and function when you plan the lighting for the different areas of your home.
