Time to think is a great thing. I've been lucky that my job in computer repair and networking allows me quiet time to reflect on all the changes I've witnesses in the computer world. When this trade first started to get traction in the late eighties things were simple. Repairs were mostly with a soldering gun in hand or replace a diskette. Now prices have made repairing PC a 50/50 gamble. If it's at the 50% of replacement then throw it away for a new computer. Give the old one to a church or non-profit for parts.

In the Internet world things are the same. Choices were limited in the beginning. A few cutting edge people in scattered areas built a link into the www system. Mom and Pop ran the ISP up the street. What has happened since is the federal government giving all access rights to fiber systems to the big Telco's and letting complete ownership of cable systems be a private venture. There is no longer anyway for the mom and pop's to play effectively and most have gone out of business.

Dialup Internet is still the largest portion of the access business but slowly the big boys are drawing it away. Nationally there are still a few good players left i.e. Juno, Justdialup, Netzero, AOL, Netscape, but mostly it is a smaller and smaller field.

Price and service are everything now. I looked to see who has the best dialup deal in the country and found that after all the hidden costs are uncovered only one is left standing.

Well enough rambling. I looked at dialup, found the best deal and have passed it on. I don't know what the future holds for DSL and Cable but I do know that costs will go up and service charges will increase.
